Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan have pledged to donate 99 percent of their company shares — currently worth an estimated $45 billion — to various charitable causes over their lifetimes.
They are doing so to celebrate the birth of baby girl Maxima, nicknamed “Max” in a letter the parents addressed to her on (where else?) Facebook.
To be sure, “Maxima” isn’t on the same level as other unusual celebrity baby names, such as Apple, daughter of Gwyneth Paltrow and Coldplay singer Chris Martin, or Dweezil, son of Frank Zappa and brother of Moon Unit and Diva Muffin (not kidding — those are their actual names. Thanks, Frank Zappa).
According to a recent report by CNN, Zuckerberg may have named his daughter in honor of two ancestors, both called Max.
As CNN reports, Max Zuckerberg — Mark’s great-grandfather — was born in New York City at the end of the 19th century. His parents were immigrants from Austria and Spain.
Max registered for the draft during World War I, although it is unknown whether he ended up fighting in Europe. He eventually married and had three children, including Mark’s grandfather, Jack.
Unlike his great-grandson, who is wealthy enough to spend an estimated $100 million on property in Hawaii for the sake of ensuring his family’s privacy, Max Zuckerberg was in a much lower tax bracket. According to CNN, his family paid $18 a month for an apartment in New York’s Lower East Side.
And while Mark Zuckerberg is the CEO of the world’s biggest social networking website, his great-grandfather had a less prestigious job. He worked as a fruit peddler, and died relatively young at age 48.
As CNN reports, another one of Mark’s ancestors changed his name to Max after he emigrated from Hungary in the late 19th century. He also lived in New York with his family on the Lower East Side, paying $45 a month in rent.
While Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla have not confirmed that they named their daughter after Mark’s great-grandfather, it’s possible that they did so to honor the more humble beginnings of the Zuckerberg family. A spokesperson for the couple did confirm to CNN that they named Maxima after family members.
